West Melbourne is a city on Florida's Space Coast, set in southern Brevard County between the larger cities of Melbourne to the east and Palm Bay to the south. It was incorporated in 1959 largely to keep the area from being annexed into neighboring Melbourne, and for decades it remained a modest residential corridor along the U.S. Highway 192 and Interstate 95 travel routes. In the years since 2000, West Melbourne has recorded the highest population growth percentage of any municipality in Brevard County, transforming from a small outlying community into a substantial suburb of roughly 26,000 residents. Interstate 95 runs along its western edge, and U.S. 192, a major regional commercial artery, cuts through the center, linking West Melbourne to Melbourne Orlando International Airport about five miles to the east and to the broader Orlando area to the northwest. West Melbourne itself is largely residential, with a mix of established subdivisions, newer planned communities, and pockets of larger-lot, semi-rural acreage such as the June Park area, parts of which remain unincorporated Brevard County. Shopping and dining concentrate along the U.S. 192 corridor and at nearby retail centers, while the city maintains neighborhood parks and the Space Coast Field of Dreams, a multi-field sports complex. Public education is provided by Brevard Public Schools, with several campuses inside the city, including West Melbourne School for Science and Edgewood Junior/Senior High, plus charter options such as Pineapple Cove Classical Academy. The city suits families, professionals tied to Space Coast employers, and retirees who want newer suburban housing with convenient access to beaches, the airport, and the wider Melbourne-Palm Bay area.
