Rockledge is a city in Brevard County, Florida, on the state's Space Coast, bordered on the east by the Indian River and on the west by the St. Johns River. The 2020 census counted 27,678 residents, and the city holds the distinction of being the oldest incorporated community in Brevard County. It lies just south of Cocoa and its historic Cocoa Village district, within the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville metropolitan area. The city's geography between two of Florida's major waterways has shaped its identity. The Indian River Lagoon provides the city's eastern waterfront, with the scenic Rockledge Drive corridor running along its shore, while the St. Johns River and its wetlands mark the western boundary. U.S. Highway 1 and the Florida East Coast Railway run through the city, a reminder of the rail line that helped open the region to settlement and that still carries freight along the coast. Rockledge serves as a regional center for health care, anchored by Rockledge Regional Medical Center, and it is primarily a residential community with a stable base of light industry and a growing variety of commercial and retail businesses. Public schools are part of Brevard Public Schools, with Rockledge High School located in the city, and the nearby aerospace and technology employers of the Space Coast draw many residents. The city has expanded steadily, and its southern edge now meets Viera, one of Brevard County's newer master-planned communities. For those relocating to the area, Rockledge offers an established, riverfront-flavored alternative to the newer developments to its south, with convenient access to Cocoa Village, the Atlantic beaches, and the employment centers of central Brevard County.
