Atlantic Barrier Island Town

Apartments in Melbourne Beach, FL

Welcome to Melbourne Beach, Brevard County's oldest beach community, set on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon.

Melbourne Beach is a small incorporated town on the southern end of Brevard County's barrier island, on Florida's Space Coast. It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Indian River Lagoon on the west, giving nearly every resident easy access to both ocean beach and estuarine shoreline. With roughly 3,200 residents, it is one of the smallest municipalities in the county and has deliberately held onto a low-rise, residential character. Founded in 1883, Melbourne Beach is Brevard County's oldest beach community. Its early history is tied to the development of the barrier island as a seaside retreat and to the fishing and citrus economy of the Indian River region. A statue at Juan Ponce de León Landing commemorates the Spanish explorer's 1513 arrival somewhere along this stretch of coast, a heritage the town has embraced. The Melbourne Beach Pier on Ocean Avenue, a Florida Heritage site, has served anglers and sightseers for generations. The town is largely residential, made up of single-family homes on tree-lined streets running from ocean to lagoon. Commercial activity is modest and clustered, leaving most of the town quiet and beach-oriented. Residents value the combination of a traditional beach-town pace with proximity to the larger cities of Melbourne and Palm Bay across the causeways, where employment, medical services, and shopping are concentrated. Daily life revolves around the water. Surfing, beachcombing, fishing, and boating are part of the routine, and the Indian River Lagoon is a nationally significant estuary for kayaking, paddleboarding, and wildlife watching. The town's parks and historic pier anchor community life, while the rest of the Space Coast, from Cape Canaveral to Sebastian Inlet, is a short drive away. For families and remote workers drawn to a quiet coastal setting, Melbourne Beach offers small-town scale with access to the Space Coast's larger economy. Its students attend Brevard Public Schools, one of Florida's consistently high-rated districts.
