Lee County Canal Community

Apartments in Lehigh Acres, FL

Welcome to Lehigh Acres, a large Lee County community east of Fort Myers, known for its canals, golf courses, and affordable Southwest Florida living.

Lehigh Acres is a census-designated place in eastern Lee County, Florida, roughly 12 miles east of Fort Myers and part of the Cape Coral–Fort Myers metropolitan area. It is one of the largest unincorporated communities in the state, and its 2020 census population of about 114,300 — up from roughly 86,800 a decade earlier — reflects sustained, rapid growth. State Road 82 forms the community's southern boundary and main artery, leading west to Fort Myers and southeast toward Immokalee. Lehigh Acres is a product of mid-century Florida land development. In the early 1950s, entrepreneur Lee Ratner, through his Lehigh Corporation, set out to transform the Lucky Lee Ranch into one of Florida's first mass-marketed residential communities, selling thousands of lots to buyers across the country. The name combined Lee County with the Lehigh Corporation. That large-scale platting left a distinctive legacy: a community laid out on an enormous grid of streets, canals, and residential lots that has taken decades to fill in — a process that continues today. The community's defining physical feature is its canal network, roughly 175 miles of waterways that thread through neighborhoods, some of which are frequented by manatees. Several golf courses, neighborhood parks, and green spaces round out the recreation base. The economy is primarily residential and service-oriented, with many residents commuting to Fort Myers and the broader Lee County employment market for work. Education is provided by the School District of Lee County, with neighborhood schools including Lehigh Elementary, Lehigh Acres Middle, and Amanecer Elementary, plus charter and private options. For homebuyers, Lehigh Acres offers single-family homes on large lots, canal-front properties, and new construction at price points generally below the coastal Lee County market — making it one of Southwest Florida's most accessible communities while remaining close to the region's beaches and employment centers.
